The age of Figmalord is upon us
It's not actually called Figmalord, or a new product at all. It is a part of Overlord, and we are incredibly excited to share it with you. Unlock this new connection with your active Overlord license and get to work.
- Add the plugin to your Figma workspace from the Figma Community to transfer layers from Figma's desktop app or browser version
- Open the plugin in your working file and start transferring
- The Figma plugin is free, but you need an active Overlord license and the desktop app to connect to Figma - renew here
If you've used Overlord before, transferring art to Ae should be self-explanatory. If you are new around here, this stuff is really easy β
Should I care about Figma?
Figma is one of our favorite apps, but unless you work with UI, it can be easy to dismiss it as another app you don't have time to learn. Figma was designed to work with screens in a way that traditional design apps simply cannot. So whether you work in tech (or want to), or need to deliver designes at multiple sizes for all the social channels, Figma is really powerful βand free for most uses.
Need to get up to speed, like yesterday? Jake's new course is the most effective way to add Figma to your motion design workflow. This course will not turn you into a full UX designer βbut it will help you get back to work.
- Learn the interface
- Utilize the unique strengths of Figma, like:
- Components
- Auto-layout
- Styles
- Prep files for animation
- Quickly move elements into Ae (hint: it's probably gonna be Overlord)
Tackle this exciting new format through the lens of motion design for only $98.00, but through the end of November 2024 its only $78.00 (20% off). No code need, just hurry before the sale is over.
History with Figma
We started working on the Overlord Figma connection before even beginning the Illustrator rewrite so that it would feel right in the Overlord v2 ecosystem. Many of the innovations that have come to Overlord came from these developments.
But way before all that, I built a plugin for Google called AEUX (read more about that). Shortly after releasing Overlord v1, I rejoined Google (in 2018) to build a connection between After Effects and a hot new design app (Figma) that was quickly taking the tech scene by storm.
In the years that would follow, management would change, and so would my daily responsibilities. AEUX has always been free and open source, but it was never released on the Figma community, and I did not have the bandwidth to maintain it. Since focusing on Battle Axe full-time, the project has gone dormant. π’
Overlord and AEUX have always been completely separate codebases (for legal reasons), which made relatively small fixes a heavy lift. In Overlord 2 we can finally utilize the same communication plumbing and data structures to make development sustainable.
Figma is an exciting platform, and we are looking forward to exploring new ways of working with design and motion on it.

Pricing and upgrading
Licenses come with one year of feature updates, so purchases after November 11, 2023 unlock v2 and the Figma connection for free. If you purchased Overlord more than a year ago, renew your license to get access to v2 and Figma, plus another year of feature updates.
Or pick up a brand new copy of Overlord. To keep things simple, new purchases and renewals are the same price.
