Timelord lives on in Overlord 2.7.0

Since connecting Photoshop to Overlord, many of you have asked about rendering frame sequences from the Photoshop timeline. I was optimistic, but it took a lot more building that I expected.

The good news is that in tests, the export time is about 8x faster than Timelord. So that's pretty cool.

Remembering Timelord

The plugin promo video that went harder than anyone expected - by Reece Parker

Born long ago, Overlord brought forth a spiritual child named Timelord. It was originally built for cel animation, and it allowed us to connect Photoshop to After Effects. Soon, the discovery of its strength to transfer of still layers gave it the unofficial title of Overlord for Ps.

We held a funeral for Timelord this past year with the release of Photoshop 2025. Adobe retired the CEP technology that allowed Timelord to pass messages between apps.

What else is new in 2.7.0?

Added

  • Ps: Image sequence export
  • A set of beautiful Rive loaders by Reece Parker
  • Support for Ae light mode - because you should have the right to burn your eyes out if you want
  • Ai: rounded rectangle detection
  • UXP plugin manual install if UPIA is unavailable

Changed

  • Revert text to METRIC kerning if Ai has AUTO selected (not available in Ae)
  • Figma: Fills visibility set to false if the path is open to better represent the source art

Fixed

  • Ai: optimized per-character text parsing to help with Adobe ram management and speed up text layer transfer 25-50%
  • Figma: Align rasterized polygons correctly
  • Ae: Approximate polygon roundness more closely matches Figma's styling
  • Ae: path properties from Ai reversed
  • Ps: Gradient reverse switch flips the Ae gradient
  • Ps: Small caps text support
  • Right-click > reload will more effectively reload all the Ae/Ai Extension systems

Thinking some thoughts

The question “what shall we do about it?“ is only asked by those who do not understand the problem. If a problem can be solved at all, to understand it and to know what to do about it are the same thing.

- Alan Watts - The Wisdom of Insecurity

This resonates with me because as designers we often label ourselves as problem-solvers. But have you ever experienced that feeling where after wrestling with a problem long enough, an elegant solution presents itself, and the answer seems obvious?

I'm starting to think that maybe the issue is me not understanding the problem well enough for the solution to become obvious.
